Courses
I teach two courses using this website. The Web Foundations Precourse and the Web Foundations Course.
Web Foundations Precourse
The precourse is a 4 session course covering the very basics of HTML. The course is designed to introduce the learner to the basics that make all web pages work.
Web Foundations course
The 120 hour Web Foundations course will teach you what you need to know to get a basic, static HTML driven website up and running. When this course is complete you will have a website and domain name you can call your own.
This course will touch on some of more complex technologies, such as JavaScript libraries, PHP form mail handelers, and some CSS that is beyond the basics. This course is mainly designed to give you the knowledge to define, design develop and deliver a working static website.
WordPress – Create a Free Website
Learn to make a professional looking website with little to no coding required and host it free on WordPress.com. Starting with templates you can build elegant pages quickly and easily. Learn the settings required to turn a WordPress.com blog into a website, and how to choose the right theme for your simple site (eg. for a small club, organization, event, travel blog, etc). Does not include how to install or customize WP on your own site. Suitable for beginners with basic internet skills (using browsers, web-based email, creating documents online). Strong windows file management skills essential. Access to your own web-based email account required during class.
WordPress – Installable CMS
Use WordPress as a content management system to enhance websites with dynamic functionality. Beyond the basics, this course will touch on using themes and organizing a site to meet your needs. Learn to install plugins and widgets, manage users, organize media, set categories and create pages. Focus will be an introduction to custom themes. Prerequisite: BSCM 710V (Web Foundations Precourse) or equivalent skills including HTML coding. Some PHP skills an asset. Not a beginner’s course. Note: students are required to register a new website/domain with a specified hosting company at an additional cost of $30 (details provided first night).
